Amsterdam is a popular tourist destination, with a vibrant night life, a huge range of museums and cultural attractions and a variety of restaurants and cafes. Popular with couples and families, groups of young people and business travelers, Amsterdam has accommodation to suit all budgets and requirements.

Anyone looking for old-fashioned luxury should stay at the NH Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky. Founded in 1866, the hotel is on The Dam, one of the main tourist squares, close to the Royal Palace and the New Church (where the current Queen was crowned). With conference facilities and meeting rooms suitable for up to 1600 people, the hotel also has a French restaurant, Le Reflet, providing traditional French and Dutch cuisine, and the Shibli Bedoin, offering Middle Eastern dining, with palm trees between the tables and a resident belly dancer. A three course meal will cost around Ђ37 ($55). Rooms range from Ђ168 ($250) per night for a standard room to Ђ680 ($1015) for a suite. A different but equally luxurious experience can be had at the newer Okura Hotel. The Okura is situated to the south of the city, about halfway between the old city center and the Ring Road. It is the only hotel in Europe to have three Michelin awards for different restaurants: two stars for Le Ciel Bleu (French) and one star for Yamazato (Japanese), with a Bib Gourmand for the Camelia Brasserie. Prices for a standard room start from around Ђ260 ($388), while a stay in The Suite, which features a private cinema and the option of being served in the suite’s dining room by one of the Michelin-starred chefs, will cost Ђ10000 ($15000).

Families traveling with children may wish to stay out of the city center or away from the red light district. The Hotel Zandbergen, a family-run hotel just outside the old center and close to the open spaces of the Vondelpark, offers triple and quadruple rooms from Ђ165 ($246) to Ђ215 ($321) in high season. The central station is short ride away using the number 2 tram; many popular tourist attractions such as the Rijksmuseum are within a ten minute walk. The Hotel Heemskerk, the smallest three star hotel in Amsterdam, also offers a quadruple bedroom, though this is actually a small suite with a double bed and a sofa bed. An additional two beds can be added at request. The room costs around Ђ270 ($400) per night, though there is a minimum booking of at least two nights. Rather than staying in a hotel, families may also wish to consider renting a self catering apartment. Prices range from Ђ20 ($30) to Ђ55 ($82) per person per night.

Travelers on a budget, or in a large group may wish to consider booking a hostel. The Amsterdam Hostel Centre is close to clubs and coffeeshops and is open 24 hours; ideal for anyone who considers 4am to be a good time to go to bed. Accommodation is basic but the hostel offers free wifi and free breakfast. A bed in a shared dormitory will cost around Ђ25 ($37) per night. The disadvantage of the hostel’s central location is that it can be more than a little noisy at night. At the other end of the scale, you can have a bed on a houseboat and be gently rocked to sleep by the waves. The Marie-Anns houseboat has two double rooms with a shared kitchen and bathroom. Well away from the city center, the Marie-Anns is perfect for a small group of friends who need some space to chill. The only drawback is how close the houseboat is to the railway line! The rooms are priced from Ђ25-Ђ35 ($37-$52).

Houseboats can also be rented for bigger parties. A large boat, with 14 twin cabins, can be hired for your exclusive use from around Ђ470 ($700) per night. For a large group, this can work out at less than Ђ20 ($30) per person. Some boats can also be chartered for trips around the canals, or further up the River Amstel to see the Dutch countryside. Smaller houseboats can be found moored close to cafes or tucked away along one of the canals. Often with just one room, they are an ideal base for a couple on a long weekend together. There really is nothing like waking up in your own personal wood-paneled cabin and then going ashore for a coffee and some waffles.

For every visitor to Amsterdam, the city has something different to offer. It’s worth taking the time to look beyond the cheapest deals on internet booking sites, and really get a feel for the amazing breadth of hotels and other accommodation choices that Amsterdam can provide.
